Remember When...
What is the memory that makes you laugh hardest today?
“We had a 48 Plymouth four door convertible {we had cut the roof off of it} all painted up to use in the homecoming parade. One early morning after the bars had closed, the Sig Alphs quietly pushed our "show" car down fraternity row, then up past Hoyt Hall, over the hill for quite a distance into the darkness of the night. After many hours of searching the next day, we found our car almost totally submerged in Skunk Lake. We never did overcome that act of one-upsmanship!” - Louis Brus Vidal, ’63
“Jack (Thunderpig) Harris considered all designs of plaid compatible with all other designs with plaid, so he would come to formal dinner or go the Sweetheart Ball wearing plaid pants, plaid sport coat and plaid necktie, all of differing design. I think one evening his date had to wear dark glasses to get through the evening.” - Drew Walker, ’76
Ryan "Barney" Martin got his usual drink on at an off campus party and passed out at about 10:00pm. He finally woke up and decided to walk the few blocks back to the house. An inebriated Barney ruined a little bit of campus property on the way home and got caught by the campus police. After a short chase, he was wrestled to the ground and pinned by a few cops, who immediately started cracking up when they discovered Barney had the word “MONKEY” written across his forehead in black permanent marker. The lesson: never pass out at a party. -Bob Mein, ‘99
"I will never forget the day they cancelled classes because of too much snow. A couple of brothers tied a rope to a truck, threw on their snow skiis, and skied up and down fraternity/sorority row."-Chris Dudley, '94
"When I was traveling back to school to start the fall semester of my senior year I broke down in the middle of Pennsylvania. My car was in pretty bad shape and i was told that it would take up to a week to fix it. I was stranded with little to no options but realized that I was in State Colleg PA and figured I could at least try to get in touch with the local Sigma Chi chapter.
The president of the house answered the phone when I called, picked me up and told me I could stay as long as I needed to. I spent the next 5 days meeting new brothers and having a great time while I waited for my car to be fixed.
It was a great experience, had i not been a Sigma Chi I would have likely had to stay in a hotel for those 5 days which would have significantly added to the cost of fixing my car. Instead I was able to have fun and get to know people I would have never met all thanks to the strength of the brotherhood of Sigma Chi." -Logan Connolly
Describe the best party
“An informal - late spring - when they pulled the cars on the front lawn, put the stereo out the windows and had a unplanned but beautifully choreographed 50's party in the moonlight during finals.” - Drew Walker, ’76
"The best parties were always the room parties Dan Fitzgerald would have in his room. Over 20 of us would cram into the room at the top of the stairs while Dan would spin the tunes, all while drinking from a 2L Coke bottle that had a little coke in it. At the same time a Joust ladder tournament would be in full swing." -Bob Mein, ‘99
"I could share memories of all of the partying we did, and vague memories of baby bawl and derby dayz. However, one of the memories that touched me the most is one that doesn't involve partying. When I was a jr. in college, my father became very ill. I recieved a call from my aunt that said that he had fallen ill, and there was not much time....and I needed to be there in a hurry. I didn't have a dime to my name, and my car was broken down..as usual. I didn't have time to get excused from classes and upcoming tests, and I also didn't have a way to get to where I needed to be. Beau Littel didn't hesitate a second when he tossed me the keys to his car. Three other brothers pitched in to get me enough money to get to where I was going and back. They told me that they would take care of getting me excused from the tests, and I was on my way.
A few days went by, and I was waiting in the hospital at Dad's bedside. We had just been informed that there was nothing left for the doctors to do. It was only time. Out of no where, 8 of my brothers came to the hospital to show their support for me and my family. On one of the darkest days that I had faced, the brothers of Gamma Xi were there for me. I owe a big thanks to those guys, and all of my brothers who helped me thru those hard few days, and the very hard months that followed."-Dustin Tidwell, 00

Hashing in the kitchen. It really seemed to be more about just hanging out than working, maybe that's why everyone always complained about us. -Bob Mein, ‘99

"The lifelong friendships which I gained."-Jack Mueller, '63
"The day I was intitiated in January, 1979, was my proudest day as a Sigma Chi. It was surpassed only by the day 26 years later when I pinned the badge on my own son at his initiation!"-Steve Fuller, '84
